Volunteering can be a positive way to spend your time and be involved with your local community. Some of the benefits of volunteering are:

  • meeting new people and making new friends
  • feeling a sense of purpose and achievement
  • learning new skills
  • improving confidence and self-esteem
  • staying physically and mentally healthy

Volunteering cannot directly help you to get a job, but many companies recognise the value of work experience and skills learned during volunteering.

Government support

The Work and Health Programme can help you find and keep a job if you're out of work. The type of help you get depends on what you need.

An Access to Work grant can pay for practical support if you have a disability, health, or mental health condition. It covers things like special equipment and fares to get to work if you cannot use public transport. Access to Work can help you to start work, stay in work or move into self-employment.
